What is the UNISON Prepaid Plus Card?
The UNISON Prepaid Plus Card is a pre-paid debit card (NOT a credit card) that can be used anywhere in the world where you see the MasterCard® Acceptance Mark. Registration for the card is quick and easy. No credit checks. Minimum top up amount is £10 and maximum is £1,000 and the first top up is required when you register for the card. Activate the card when you receive it and start spending/continue topping up! You can top up your card securely via the Top Up Card tab online at www.unisonprepaid.com/card. Once the funds have cleared on your card account, you can use the card and spend the balance as you would with any other debit card. In fact, it's exactly the same as using any other debit card except you will start to accumulate cashback when you spend at our retail partners.
Can I register straight away?
Yes, you are eligible as long as you are a member of one of our partner unions and have an email address. You can see the partner unions in the drop down section of the application form. Please call customer services on 0344 846 8064 for more information.
Are there any restrictions to applying for a card?
You must be a member of one of our partner unions. As part of the application process
we may use the personal information provided to conduct appropriate anti fraud checks. This may result in you
receiving a restricted card which will reduce the limits available on your card. Restricted cards will allow you to
spend up to £1,600 per year of which £600 can be withdrawn from a cash machine and up to £600 can be
spent on a single purchase. To upgrade your card we will need to carry out an identity check and will require you to
provide documentation from the list below and send to UNISON Prepaid Plus, Avalon House, Breckland, Linford Wood,
Milton Keynes, MK14 6LD. Please note you will be charged £5 to upgrade your card.

- Make sure this documentation has not expired and in the case of bills and insurance documents, is less than 3 months old.
Do I have to pay to have a UNISON Prepaid Plus Card?
It is FREE to apply for a UNISON Prepaid Plus Card, Once you have a card, the monthly fee is £1.95.
When will I receive my UNISON Prepaid Plus Card?
You will receive the UNISON Prepaid plus card in approximately 14 days from application. If you don't receive your card, please contact Customer Service on 0344 846 8064.
How do I earn cashback using the UNISON Prepaid Plus Card?
Simple. Get your card. Make sure it's topped up with funds. Start spending online or in-store at our retail partners to accumulate cashback and when you next top up, the cashback you have earned will automatically be credited to your account. It usually takes about 5 - 7 days for your cashback purchases to be processed so please don't worry if not all of your cashback appears if you top up quite soon after you have spent. The exception is Sainsbury's due to their process for calculating cashback and this can result in a longer timeframe which could be as long as 6 - 7 weeks. Where possible, we will always credit your account as soon as we are advised of the cashback to be awarded.
Can I get an additional card on my account?
Yes, you can get an additional card with the same benefits as long as it's for someone in the same household as you. Tick the "Would you like an additional card" box when you register or alternatively, you can order one via the Get Additional Card tab online at www.unisonprepaid.com/card. Additional card fees apply.
How do additional cards work?
You both share one account and spend from one account balance. Top ups can be made by either of you. Both cards are sent separately and need to be activated by each card holder. Once they are activated, both can use their cards at retail partners earning cashback as you spend. Cashback is credited to the account as and when it is topped up.
Where can I use my card?
Your card is accepted anywhere you see the MasterCard Acceptance Mark which is at over 32 million retailers worldwide. It's just the same as using any other MasterCard debit card.
Can I use it for shopping on-line?
Yes your UNISON Prepaid Plus Card is accepted at most on-line retailers. You can also use it in-store or on the telephone. It's just the same as using any other MasterCard debit card.
Can I get my balance when I am out shopping?
Yes, you can register your mobile phone number to get your balance by text message, details are in the Text Balance tab in this website.
Where do I top up my card?
You can top up your card online via the Top Up Card tab in this website. The free way to load money onto your card is to set up a monthly direct debit from your bank account. Alternatively you can load using a debit card at www.unisonprepaid.com/card, alternatively load your card with cash at a Post Office counter or PayPoint terminal.
How can I top-up my UNISON Prepaid Plus Card?
You can top-up your card using one of the following payment options:
- Monthly direct debit
- Debit Card payment
- PayPoint terminal
- Post Office counter
Can I access my account on-line?
Yes. When you have registered, you will be sent a user code and pass code by email. Keep this safe as you will need it to access your online account in the future. Your online account can be accessed at www.unisonprepaid.com/card 24 hours a day. You can edit your personal details, top up your card, check your statement/balance/cashback earned & pending as well as set up text balance alerts.
Is there a minimum spend required to receive my cashback?
No, there is no minimum spend to receive your cashback. You just need to make sure you have sufficient funds on your card before you start spending.
Do I still receive loyalty points i.e. Nectar or Advantage?
Yes. All other retailer loyalty schemes and offers can be used alongside your card giving you even more value when spending with the UNISON Prepaid Plus Card.
What happens if my card is lost or stolen?
You must notify us immediately if your card is lost of stolen. Please call 0344 846 8064 immediately to block your card, any fraudulent use of the card is the responsibility of the cardholder unless they have reported the card lost or stolen. If your card is stolen, report this to the police and obtain a crime reference number. If you do not have a crime reference number a replacement card will cost £5.
My card was declined, what could the problem be?
- Got sufficient funds on the card to cover the purchase?
- Activated the card?
- Used the correct PIN?
What happens if I forget my PIN?
This is the 4 digit PIN you were given when you activated the card over the phone. If you need a reminder, please call the UNISON Prepaid Plus hotline on 0344 846 8064 and select the "Forgotten PIN" option.
Can I change my PIN?
You can change your PIN at any cash machine displaying the MasterCard Acceptance Mark. Simply put your card in the machine and select PIN options.
Can I use my card abroad?
Yes. You can use it wherever the MasterCard Acceptance Mark is displayed. As with most payment cards, there is a 3% foreign exchange fee which will apply to every purchase and you will not qualify for cashback when spending abroad.
Can I use my card to withdraw cash?
Yes - you can use your card to withdraw money from cash machines at home and abroad. Additional fees apply for this service, please check Terms & Conditions.
Are there any restrictions on where I use my card?
There are a few restrictions such as gambling and adult websites please see the Terms and Conditions for more information. Some retailers also have exclusions - a full list can be found on the website under Retailer Exclusions.
Will I earn cashback on petrol?
No. You also do not earn cashback on non-petrol items purchased at petrol stations.
Will the range of retailer partners and their cashback rates change?
Occasionally we do add or remove new partners but always aim to offer a comprehensive range of outlets where you can earn cashback. Whilst we can't rule out any change governed by market forces, we will endeavour to maintain our current rates wherever possible. Please check the web site which maintains an up to date listing and any amendments to the retail partner list and cashback rates.
Does it cost anything to top-up my UNISON Prepaid Plus Card?
The "Top Up Card" tab on your online account give you a full breakdown of the
top up options and any charges that are applicable or please see our Terms & Conditions on the web site for full
fees chargeable which will always reflect the most current version.
- Direct Debit - We recommend you set up a Direct Debit payment for your top ups to take away the hassle. Topping up your card by Direct Debit is free.
- Standard top up: It is free when you top up over £200 by debit card however there is an admin fee of £1.00 if it is under £200. The money will leave your bank account immediately and will take 4 days to clear and be available on your UNISON Prepaid Plus Card.
- Instant top up: You can also request an 'instant' top up where the funds are available immediately - this will cost £2.50.
- Post Office or PayPoint top-up - You can top-up your card with cash at a Post Office counter or PayPoint terminal and will be charged 3% of the top up value.
When will my Direct Debit load happen?
The funds will be taken from your bank account on the first working day of each month. The money will be available for you to spend on your UNISON Prepaid Plus Card on the 4th working day of each month.
What if my monthly direct debit is not enough?
If you've chosen to load your card by monthly direct debit and you find the amount of the direct debit is not enough to pay for the things you need in any month, you can top up your card anytime at www.unisonprepaid.com/card using your debit card. If you wish to increase the amount of your direct debit for the future please call us on 0344 846 8064. Alternatively you can load the card with cash at a Post Office counter or PayPoint terminal.
Does it cost anything to use my UNISON Prepaid Plus Card?
There is a monthly fee of £1.95 when you have an active balance on your card. There are no transaction costs involved with the UNISON Prepaid Plus Card when used in the UK. For charges relating to use outside the UK, please refer to the Terms & Conditions.
Will there be a credit check?
No, there are no credit checks or lengthy application process. You fill in an online form and apply instantly. We may use personal information provided by you in order to conduct appropriate anti fraud checks. Personal information that you provide may be disclosed to a credit reference or fraud prevention agency, which may keep a record of that information.
